| FAQ'S |
| 1. How does this whole process work if I want a photo restored? You send us either a scanned copy of your image, or your original photo, tell us what you want done with it (correct fading, improve color, change backgrounds, etc.) and then we provide you a firm quote by email. Go to our HOW TO ORDER page for a full explanation. 2. Do you work on the original picture I send you? No, we do not work on your original image. We make a new digital image from your original and do our restoration work with that image. Your original image is returned to you exactly as it was received. 3. What do you do when you get my picture and begin the restoration process? We scan your original image in one of our professional high definition scanners specifically used for restoration scans. We scan at very high resolution levels in order to get as much detail from the image as possible. The more detail - the better the restoration. To give you an example, most pictures you see on the Internet have a resolution of 72 dpi (dots per inch). Most older color and black and white photos have a resolution of 150 - 200 dpi. Most newer digital cameras have a resolution of 250 - 300 dpi. When we scan an image, we do so at various levels in order to get the most viable image to work with. In most cases, we end up using an image scanned at a minimum of 600 dpi or higher. Our equipment is actually capable of scanning at 12,800 dpi, but this is rarely necessary. After getting a viable image from a successful scan, we manipulate and correct the image using various digital software programs. In most cases, we use the powerful Adobe Photoshop program, although we also have various other programs, imaging software, and color correction filters available. On an individual image by image basis, we determine which software will do the best job. Photo restoration is a time consuming and exacting process, but the results are quite dramatic. 4. Can I just scan my own pictures and then send them to you via email? Yes, if you would like to do this, see our TIPS ON SCANNING page for instructions. Keep in mind, we may request you send us the actual photograph if the scan you send us doesn't provide enough detail. During our scanning process, we can use various settings in the scanner, depending upon the needs of each particular image, to produce the best scan possible. If you send us an image by email, it tends to be much "smaller" in size and resolution, and thus harder to restore to your satisfaction. If you'd like, send us your scan and we'll get back to you right away with our opinion. 5. What kinds of photo damage can you repair? Is there anything you can't fix? Most damaged photos can be restored, but not all. We can restore discoloration, fading, rips, tears, stains, age spots, and some over or under-exposures. We can improve fuzzy pictures to some degree, but cannot add detail where it does not exist. We can create artistic renderings where parts of pictures are torn out, but cannot restore the original unless it is provided to us in another picture. In these cases we can "clone" parts of images from another photo to fix the damage. With the proper image available, cloning works quite well and no one will notice any difference. 6. What do I get with my order? You get the very best service in the industry. At PhotoExperts.net, we treat you like family. Take a look at our ABOUT US page and you'll see why we love this kind of work! You will receive our best efforts no matter what you have us do. After the restoration you have a choice of what print sizes to order. See our HOW TO ORDER page for details. 7. Can you print my restored image? Absolutely, and we highly recommend you have us do so. We use high resolution printers that use a pigment based ink system rather than the more traditional dye based ink. Without getting too technical, most modern ink jet printers use a water soluble ink process, wherein colors start to deteriorate immediately upon hitting the photo paper. You will see noticeable color fading on most prints from an ink jet printer in as little as six months. In comparison, the printer, ink and photo paper we use are rated to last 200 years without fading if stored in archival photo albums, or 65 years without fading if they are displayed under a glass frame. In regards to prints from retail photo services, you have likely noticed many of your prints come out flat looking or the colors don't seem to match up to the way they looked in your digital camera or on your computer. Most retail photo services are set up for volume output, not necessarily quality. In comparison, we routinely use professional calibration equipment to calibrate our monitors, our computer software, and our printers to make sure the color we're producing on a printed photo is the exact same color we're seeing on our monitors. The printers we use for our restored prints use nine different color cartridges and produce both colored prints and black and white photos in amazing and vibrant detail. We offer our prints in various sizes in glossy and matte finishes. We know you'll love the results! 8. Why do I have to pay something before you start my order? Photo restoration is a time-consuming process. We require deposits equal to 50% of the quoted price before we start work to assure our time is well-spent. We require full payment before the completed work is sent to you. Our guarantee is that you will be satisfied. In rare cases where we determine we cannot restore your image, your deposit and original image will be returned to you at our expense. If we send you a firm quote and you decline to accept, we mail you back your original image, also at our expense. 9. How do I place an order? Go to our HOW TO ORDER page and follow the simple instructions. 10. How should I ship my photos? See our SHIPPING TIPS PAGE for how to ship your photos. 11. How long will it take to complete my order? This depends on what level of work you have requested. In most cases, our work is completed in less than a week. We ship by Federal Express, 2nd Day Shipping, if we are returning original photos, or by Priority Mail, US Postal Service, if we are shipping non originals. You should have your photos within 10 days of your down payment most of the time! If we encounter delays, we will let you know immediately. Extensive work can sometimes take longer, but we will keep you informed as necessary. 12. What if I am not satisfied with the results of the restoration? At PhotoExperts.net, we try to satisfy our customers every time. If you are not happy, contact us and we will work with you to achieve the best resolution. Happy customers will refer us to their friends - it is in our best interest to make you happy. And we believe that you, like the others who have used our services, will be very happy with the results. 13. Can you alter magazine or newspaper photos? Yes, but - and this is very important - we cannot work on copyrighted images. Most magazine and newspaper photos are the property of the newspaper or magazine itself - not you - even if you are in the picture. The same holds true for photographs you may have had taken by a professional photographer or studio. By sending us an image to restore, you are verifying you are the owner of that photo and it is not copyrighted to someone else. PhotoExperts.net honors all copyrights and may require proof of copyright or a copyright release form before altering or restoring such images. 14. Can you restore and print negatives, slides, and transparencies? Yes! We can scan your negative or other transparency and make the necessary corrections the same way we would a print. 15. What if I have both photos and negatives of the same image? Go ahead and send both images to us. We'll scan each of them and select the best image to work with. 16. Can I see how work is progressing or see the final images before I make final payment? Yes! Just let us know and we will email you a link to one of our private website pages where we will load your image and show you the progress to date. Upon completion, we will email you a link to another private website page and you'll be able to compare your original image with the corrected photo. The copyrighted and watermarked corrected photo will not be suitable for printing, but will be of sufficient quality for you to fully evaluate and approve. See our Sample Proof Page for an example of how your final image will be presented. When your payment is made in full, you will receive your completed order. Back to the top |
